Duochrome

"Duochrome" deals with two colors: black and white. Ultimately the paintings are polychromatic because the black and white blended make up a variety of silver/grey colors--plus the background of the exposed raw canvas, linen, hemp, jute, etc. shows through and alters the perceived foreground colors--but I am only using two colors of paint. The use of different fabrics is to play with their color, and in a non-altered way, without tinting or painting it for example. Even though these paintings do not deal with an array of colors, I feel them to be a complex exploration of the ones involved.

"I have always admired the colors of raw artist fabrics and supports, but in the end have gessoed over them with white before beginning to paint. In the Duochrome works, I use a clear primer so the color of the fabric shows through as the background. I want to highlight the influence the raw fabric colors have on the overall picture plan, and how they influence our perception of the black and white acrylic paint drips I put down. I like how each painting has a different mood based on the hue of the fabric. Ultimately, it shows how subtle variation creates dynamic results." -Gregory Hayes
